WORRIED grey nomads are turning to mail forwarding services in increasing numbers to overcome a rise in identity theft.
The boss of a family-owned company which operates a mail collection and forwarding service said crooks often targeted letters meant for people who were away from home.
"Mail forwarding services are becoming more and more popular these days with the increase in cases of identity theft through stolen mail," SOS Mail Solutions director Tara Burton told Caravanning News.
She said travellers were often reluctant to trouble family and friends to collect and forward their mail.
Ms Burton's family business was established six years ago and is able to collect mail from a secure Post Office box facility, let clients know via a secure website what they had received and if necessary scan the mail so they could view and act on it if necessary.
The company could then package up mail and send forward it either, weekly, fortnightly or monthly, she said.
"Bigger companies like Australia Post offer mail forwarding services, but they will not forward mail to several addresses or offer tailor-made packages like we do.
"For example, we can forward our client’s mail to various addresses if they happen to be staying at a number of different destinations.
"We can also scan their mail and upload it immediately if it is urgent, and we will even bank cheques on their behalf.
“We pride ourselves on being flexible and offering our clients a service that suits their unique situation. If one of our client’s wants something scanned and emailed urgently we will never say no. We will even store mail for extended periods without extra cost to the client”, she said.
For clients worried about unwanted mail piling up and being sent to them, SOS also offer a mail deletion service, where clients can nominate online if they want the mail item destroyed and shredded.
"This saves on postage costs as we won't post the client any mail which is unwanted," Ms Burton said.
To ensure maximum safety and security, SOS has invested in full back-up systems for its website and all clients' mail is catalogued and stored in a secure facility.
